CFLS Book Club
The Junior League of Washington in partnership with CFLS and Milestone Place hosts a monthly book club. We believe that reading can assist our clients in taking a second look at their personal circumstances and become aware that their situation may not be that unique. This gives our clients the comfort in knowing they are not alone in the challenges they face; the realization that what they are going through is just temporary and, that they too, can and will rise above their challenges to a brighter future. The book club also provides our clients with the tools and guidance to create a better quality of life for themselves and their family.
The current book selection is What Looks Like Crazy on an Ordinary Day by Pearl Cleage. This book shares universal trials and tribulations of life experienced through Cleages imperfect characters and leaves the reader with a sense of strength, courage, and ambition. Next month the group will be reading The Alchemist by author Paulo Coelho.
In The Key of Life...
Every Monday, the students in our after school program travel up to Glen Echo to work with tutors and mentors from the Holy Church of Redeemer. In addition to the one on one support with homework, a lot of students are trying their hand at new activities. A few students have taken to the piano - they have received some initial lessons from tutors and many are looking forward to the full blown music program during CFLS summer camp.
Service Learning at CFLS
Pastor Menckes Confirmation class from the German Lutheran Church joined CFLS last week in a two-part service leaning project. On Wednesday evening, the kids came to CFLS to learn about the crisis of homelessness and poverty in DC and the different ways CFLS programs are suited towards alleviating this crisis. The students had a chance to tour our facilities, and to listen, first hand, to one of our clients talk about the challenges she has faced as a homeless mother in DC as well as her success overcoming homelessness since living in Trinity Arms CFLS two year transitional housing.
On Saturday morning, bright and early, the students returned to cook and serve a breakfast for the homeless. We had a huge crowd, topping 200 people, but still, were able to provide everyone with a hot breakfast, including: scrambled eggs, turkey bacon, hash browns, and biscuits. The kids did a great job, and received compliment after compliment for the food! Throughout the process, they asked great questions, and were truly engaged in the work. They really took advantage of the opportunity to serve: they learned about some of the social and material issues that are at the root of homelessness
