The People We Serve - Families
All too often, poverty and homelessness tears families apart. In the District of Columbia, finding and maintaining decent, affordable housing and jobs that pay livable wages can be difficult, if not downright impossible. Add to this already volatile mix a lack of access to affordable childcare or after-school programs.
Families in need of shelter have very few options; in many cases, a family may have to split up to ensure emergency housing for individual members. Without appropriate intervention, children may end up in foster care while their parents drift in and out of minimum wage employment and from shelter to street to shelter.
Community Family Life Services provides families in crisis transitional and long-term housing along with supportive services, such as employment assistance, health and wellness services. Children can attend tutoring and academic enrichment programs, and a summer day camp.
