Shelter Plus Care
CFLS' Shelter Plus Care program is a five-year transitional housing program for families where the head of household has been dually or triply diagnosed with mental health challenges, a history of substance abuse, and/or HIV/AIDS. CFLS aims to enable each client to lead a positive life through counseling, support, and therapy. The Shelter Plus Care Program consists of nine housing units for families needing this additional support.
Individuals who are enrolled in our Shelter Plus Care program have already been through a screening process, including a psychiatric evaluation. Residents in Shelter Plus Care are in continual communication with CFLS case managers and Health and Wellness counselors. Many of our Shelter Plus Care residents are unable to work but receive Social Security Disability Insurance. Those who are able to work are referred to our Employment Department. Most of the children living in Shelter Plus Care take part in the activities sponsored by our Youth Education and Advocacy Department, including tutoring and summer camp.
For these families, there are several advantages to staying in our Shelter Plus Care Program. Besides being able to benefit from CFLS' Continuum of Care, they receive rental assistance from The Community Partnership for the Prevention of Homelessness.
