FUNtastic Summer

Washington summers are hot and humid.  For children without summer activities, the season can be boring and offer the perfect opportunity for them to get into trouble while trying to amuse themselves. According to the organization, For Love of Children, the average child loses approximately five months worth of education over the three months of summer.  Many of the children we see here are already struggling to catch up to, and stay in step with, their classmates. For them, summertime can further imperil their chances for future success.

CFLS responds to these needs by providing a free day camp for children and youths. The camps focuses on physical fitness and recreation, intellectual stimulation and character building through sports, arts, music, day trips and lessons on civics and citizenship. Our goal over the summer is to help maintain happiness, safety and academic progress. Camp activities in 2006  included visits to Splash Down Water Park, a young peoples' exhibit at the National Building Museum called "Young Builders: Patterns Here, There, and Everywhere," and  the Smithsonian Folk Life Festival.

Other activities included educational workshops on topics such as life skills, character building, etiquette and cultural diversity. A family fun day was among the scheduled events, too.

CFLS' summer camp is open to DC children ages 5 to 13.  We encourage our older youth to work at the camp as Counselors in Training (CIT) and Youth Workers. This year, the camp will run from June 25-August 10.  For more information please call 202 347-0511 ext 207.
