Two-Year Transitional Housing

CFLS operates three two-year transitional housing programs.  These programs are aimed at providing the life-skills education, individualized case management, and supportive counseling that a family needs to make the transition from a state of homelessness into more permanent housing.

CFLS' first transitional housing facility, Trinity Arms, was opened near Judiciary Square in 1988 and is a 19-unit drug and alcohol-free apartment complex owned and operated by CFLS.  Since then, CFLS has opened up our Reunification Transitional Housing Program, a 21-unit supportive housing program that reunites families separated by homelessness and the foster care system.  Families at risk for losing their children are also likely residents of the Reunification program.  CFLS' third transitional housing facility is Supportive Housing, a 20-unit building located in the Brandywine neighborhood in Southeast Washington.

Families living in a CFLS housing facility pay 30% of their net monthly income towards rent, sign a lease agreement, and develop a Family Work Plan with a Case Manager to set goals and tasks the family members will undertake over the course of two years.   Heads of households attend weekly workshops and one-on-one coaching (as needed) for life skills counseling, parenting skills, budgeting and preparation for eventual home-ownership.   In addition, CFLS' Health and Wellness staff work very closely with all residents in group and individual counseling sessions throughout their stay.   Children living in CFLS Transitional Housing take part in the Youth Education and Advocacy Programs and parents are encouraged to take advantage of our Employment and Job Training Services.

CFLS' residents are also lucky to have volunteers who help to facilitiate interesting and innovative programs at the various sites.   One such program is conducted by the Junior League of Washington.  These devoted volunteers have begun a book group for the residents at our Reunification Housing Program.

Every family member has access to all of CFLS' services during the course of their stay.  At the end of the two-year period that the family lives in CFLS Transitional Housing, they are eligible to take part in our SAFAH (Supplemental Assistance for Families in Assisted Living) program, which transitions families into permanent housing.

Trinity Arms Transitional Housing Program was winner of the Metropolitan Life Foundation's Award for Excellence in Supportive Housing in 1998.
